Alicante, Valencia

Alicante is a Spanish town and municipality, capital of the community of Valencia, located along the Mediterranean coast, on a plain circumvented by hills and elevations. The municipality has a population of more than 334,000 inhabitants, a port city whose main commitment is to tourism and services sector. The city is also notable for trade and not surprisingly ranks fifth nationally in importance regarding commerce.

Its airport is relatively close, just 9 kilometers away in the village of El Altet. Alicante has suburban train, fast trains connecting Alicante-Valencia-Barcelona and Alicante-Madrid, plus for 2012 is estimated the arrival of the AVE high speed train to the municipality. As a peculiarity, Alicante also has the TRAM-Metropolitan, trains and trams connecting the beaches with the city centre and other outlying towns such as Benidorm, Altea and Denia. A bus network consisting of approximately 40 lines covers the whole urban territory.

The city of Alicante has a dry Mediterranean climate. During the year the temperatures are always mild and it rains very little; during the month of January temperatures can range between 6ºC and 17ºC; in August temperatures move around 20ºC and 30°C with an annual average of 17, 8ºC. Frost and temperatures above 40 degrees are very rare. Most rainfall is concentrated in the months of September and October. You can get to enjoy over 2800 hours of sunshine a year.

Alicante was under Islamic rule between 718 and 1248, nowadays can be seen archaeological remains from that time next the city council. The Cathedral of San Nicolas de Bari, the Monastery of la Santa Faz, la casa de la Asegurada, the Town Hall of Alicante, Teatro Principal de Alicante and La Longa de Pescado, among others.
