The airport is situated 9 km southwest of Alicante, next to El Altet and Torrellano (IATA code : ALC, ICAO code: LEAL).
Because of its location, the airport provides a great service to most of the Spanish Levant. Traditionally it has generated significant charter traffic, and now focuses its traffic on international scheduled flights.

It ranks as the sixth airport in Spain in number of passengers and is situated among the 50 busiest airports in Europe. In 2010 the airport of Alicante has received 9,382,935 passengers and maintains a steady increase throughout the past decade.

Alicante Airport has two passenger terminals where is operated all the traffic, but in 2011 will be completed the construction of the new terminal (NAT), which will multiply by six the current area and which will have a maximum capacity of 20 million passengers a year; with the entry into operation of this new terminal, the current T1 and T2 will be out of service.
